19 Feb Pete Dickens on tailwheel training in the Husky
I started my tail wheel conversion after looking for a new challenge not so many hours after gaining my PPL. I’d always heard that to be a real pilot you should be able to fly a taildragger. Not knowing what to expect, I signed up and found myself strapped into G-ROVA the Husky.
The first thing I noticed was how immaculate the plane was. I’d been used to beat up trainer type aircraft but G-ROVA is an exception. Clean, modern and equipped. I felt lucky to get to fly such a plane.
The first few flights I made flying hard for myself but with patience and guidance from the guys it all started to click into place. Before I knew it, landing on a short grass strip was a doddle.
I have to say my favourite thing to do in the Husky is flying circuits, but I can highly recommend going sightseeing too. With an almost panoramic view out the front and sides, flying off to find some good scenery is a must.
I was lucky enough to train with both Peter and Bob and I think it’s set me up well for my taildragger adventures. Perhaps my logbook is a giveaway on how much I enjoy flying the Husky as last year it’s all I flew!
